Listed above are some of the consequences that many people experience as a direct consequence of addiction. Equally these are the consequences that people experience when they have stopped using substances but have not adequately dealt with the illness of addiction.

So, are you clean and sober but still very unhappy? Have you developed other addictions since you gave up alcohol and drugs; a problem with food, relationships, sex, overspending, exercise, or even cleaning? Do you compulsively help others at the expense of yourself?

Do you feel out of control and are you overwhelmed by obsessions and shame, jealousy, anxiety, rage or depression?

If so, you need skilled and experienced help and with the process addictions like food, sex and relationships you need a period of clearly defined abstinence. Extended time in treatment offers this solution.

Recovery is supposed to be about being happy, joyous and free. However not everybody can achieve this with meetings, step work and a sponsor. Problems with trauma and family of origin issues can get in the way and healing from addiction involves so much more than just stopping drug and alcohol use. It is about really changing.
